A completely different view of this can be found in Dr. Sarno's book "Healing Back Pain" - it's an older book so there's lots of cheap used copies on Amazon. This is one of the most interesting books I've read. My dentist recommended it - he was helped a lot with his back pain reading this thing. I read it many times - and it's helped me too.

anyway - it's cheap - and it's absolutely non-invasive - and it's so much fun to read. Dr. Sarno is a real doctor - not some nut case.

There is nothing really more that you can do i have two protruding discs in my back. They put me through some physical therapy to strengthen my back muscles around it to keep my disc in place and not coming in contact with my nerves. However, my back still randomly has pain disabling me to the point where i can not move without aggravating it.

There are different treatments, but sometimes surgery is the only choice. But you shouldn't have surgery unless you have symptoms of nerve involvement, such as problems with your legs (weakness, numbness, tingling.) I'm not a big fan of chiropractors, but some use a device called Med-X that actually reduces herniations. Make sure to get opinions from both an orthopedist and a neurosurgeon and discuss all of your options. (However never let a chiro do manipulations if you have a herniation.)

It can take up to three epidurals to see results. After three, it won't make any difference. Make sure you get physical therapy too.
