Fusion is almost always associated with some level of chronic pain. Unless you have a significant widespread neurological deficits and weakness, I would try all conservative options first.

I would definetely recommend a course of PT...more specifically from someone who is trained in mechanical diagnosis and therapy (go to http://www.mckenziemdt.org ). Not only can they help correct most cases, but they can show you how to reduce your risk of reoccurance and what to do if it ever comes back.

Fusion comes with some significant risks including infection, permanent nerve damage, etc...sometimes once one fusion is done, it's only a matter of time before another level has to be done.

Definetely seek another opinion...it doesn't sound like there is any immediate need to rush off to surgery.

I had bulging disk that were found after a car accident. I went to a neurologist that started me on Vax-D treatment. The recovery was long, but the outcome was amazing. Try to google it to see if this is an option that you may want to try and then find a doctor that does this. It was covered by insurance and is not painful. Avoid any doctor that would jump into surgery without first trying other methods of improving the condition. Good Luck and God Bless.

That doctor must have a lot of bills to pay. He is treating your MRI plates, not you. See another doctor. You won't regret it.

Surgery should be the last resort after trying everything else. Don't let them fuse your neck as it constricts your movement, and again should be a last resort. Sounds to me like you need a second opinion. Mean while I would go with physio and accupuncture, if you can find a chiropractor that does kinesiology and muscle work, I go to one and he doesnt crack bones, he is very gentle, they helped me alot. I have bulging discs in my L5, L4, and L3 and S1, happened 6 weeks ago , and the pain has been unbearable, I am actually going for an injection to my back in a few days, to try an avoid surgery.
My thoughts and prayers are with you, take care, remember its your body and you get to decide whats best for you.
God bless.

surgery should only be a last resort....so try other methods of helping your back, like the physical therapy...then if after all the others have failed then I'd have the surgery. God bless, and I hope you get better soon. :)

don't let anyone fuse any bones in your body. I have had surgery for ruptured discs in my lower back but never had any fused, don't let them fuse.

You seriously sound like you need a second opinion.

My doctor divides neurosurgeons into two groups: Conservatives and Cowboys. Sounds like you got a cowboy. Ask your regular doctor for a second referral and explain that you were uneasy with the first guy's eagerness to jump right to the most radical option.
